Look For Less: Industrial Hanging Planter

The Look For Less Design Challenge is back with vengeance! Everyone has some pretty awesome projects that are sure to spruce up your space so please be sure to visit each of these ladies!  Also, I've got a bit of a sneak peak and links at the bottom of the post too :)

For this challenge I've known I wanted to try something outside. I love our yard and have written about it multiple times but there was always this one spot that I just couldn't figure out how to make it pretty.  Our house is old which means old siding, and old molding. The age is really showing next to our back door. There is just a bit of a junky spot. So I decided to search the wonderful google machine to find some inspiration that could help me beautify this tattered spot.

Of course West Elm has some amazing things. I've pinned a ton of planters I wanted to try but as soon as I saw this Galvanized Industrial Hanging Planter I fell in love  but not with the $49 price tag. So I  started brain storming ways I could get this look for less.

Basically all I needed was PVC pipe, some spray paint, rope, and pretty flowers. Heres a quick materials list with the prices.
1 5ft section of 4 in PVC pipe     $9
4 4 inch end caps                       $5
1 spool of rope                          $6
Silver Spray paint                      $6
This means for about $26 I made TWO planters!

Now to get two planters I bought a large enough piece of PVC to cut in half both ways (hot dog and hamburger style). So first off I cut the board in to 2 1/2 ft sections.
Then I guestimated how much I needed to cut off to leave room for the plants. I would recommend getting a larger diameter piece of PVC, but for the small flowers I was planning to use this was just fine :) I marked a straight line down either side of the board and slowly cut with my jig saw.
Then I chose my largest drill bit, and drilled two holes on either end for my rope.

Now comes the part where you kinda just play around. I sprayed each of my pieces of PVC with the silver spray paint, then I dry brushed some white craft paint on and smudged it around a good bit so it wasn't "too" noticeable. I couldn't figure out what to use to get the dark spots and then I remembered I had some ebony wood stain. So I splotched some one and wiped it around too. You can see in the third picture that the top has the stain and the bottom doesn't.

WAH LA! Thats pretty close to the real deal I think.

Then all that was left to do was attach the rope. And in this case it was SUPER easy! Just measure out your rope length for your specific spot, pull the rope through and under the PVC. I used shower curtain rings as the hooks and simply tied them together and done!

I just LOVE these planters. I mean they aren't perfect but for $26 for 2 I think they do exactly what I needed! They add some texture and allow new space for beautiful new plants. By adding these small planters I created a whole new atmosphere on our porch and I'm in love with it!

Spring Parties

Ya know what I've been missing the most in life recently?
Parties. Get togethers. BBQs. Fire pits.
Oh, tis the season. FINALLY!
I've slowly been working on getting our yard ready for any spontaneous party, and we are almost there!

It took me ages to find out door furniture. And really I didn't find anything that fit my budget and my style soooo Reed and I made some :) I painted this spool for a table, we made some super awesome whimsical chairs. And I've even stocked up on lots of glass ware

I think my favorite part about summer parties is that they can look amazing with minimal effort. I mean I'm pretty in love with this super simple lunch we had a few weeks ago. Picked a few fresh flowers, used my fabulous new Monogrammed Mason Jars from Personal Creations. They fit perfectly in with my glass pitcher and everyday china.  You can make any get together feel like a "party" by using real glasses and china instead of that fine plastic goodness. Obviously, I use paper and plastic at times, but when i want that extra oomph I pull out my pretties :)

I also leave white lights up all year round, that way when the sun goes down the party doesn't have to end! Just keep on filling up those mason jars and enjoy the twinkly lights :)

And Personal Creations has so much awesome-ness on their website that would be PERFECT for any out door party. What are some tricks y'all use to make your get togethers extra special during the spring and summer?

Whimsical Stump Chairs

Ok ok this is a bit late but I've been outside enjoying the weather and working on LOTS of projects. A week "off" from blogging wasn't planned but boy was it needed. But I'm ready to get back in to it and share some of the awesome-ness I've been up to lately.

Do you remember those stumps Reed brought home randomly back in January? Well I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them as soon as I saw them but needed a warm day to convince Reed to help me with it. I also needed time to collect the rest of my materials. Yep, I found some chair backs on the side of the road and they were perfect!

You also need a husband who is willing to spend a Saturday wielding a chainsaw and getting covered in dust while you brain storm the best way to hollow out a stump that weighs over 100 lbs. Reed is the genius that came up with cutting out legs, I was trying to figure out how to cut a circle in the bottom and that wasn't working in any kinda of good way. So our first stump is still super heavy and I don't think we can cut any more out with out destroying it totally, so  it may just turn in to a side table for the porch :)

We just placed the chair backs on the stumps, marked where they hit and drilled angled holes that where the exact size of the rungs. Once we got them all set where they needed to be we enforced them with screws.

And I'm gonna be honest, other than painting the green chair back I didn't do anything. Reed is so great at taking my crazy ideas and figuring out how to make them work. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have any of the super cool projects finished. I'm excited to see how our back yard is transforming in to a place that I think we will really enjoy this spring and summer. I mean who wouldn't wanna eat dinner out under our big tree in these fun chairs!

I still have to finish up a few things for the yard before I get these put in place and do a "back yard tour". But for now I hope y'all think they are as cool as I do!

A Spring-y Making Monday Link Up!

Spring Came Back!

So the beginning of last week was a little sad. Bad weather, cold, rainy and just nasty out side. So at the beginning of the week I was a bit out of it and uninterested in getting out of my pajamas :) But then I got super busy enjoying new friends and Reed and I actually went out with friends 4 times this week! y'all have no idea that is huge for us now! Anyway, the pretty weather is back and it looks like it will be staying for a while :)

I haven't heard much from Lori so I am praying she is enjoying her time with her family. Y'all continue to head over to her blog and let her know you miss her at the party whenever she can't make it, I know I do!!

This is a party where you can find fun new creative ideas and tasty recipes shared by amazingly talented people. Every Monday bloggers stop by to link up their posts and share with all you party goers. By joining in {both bloggers and non-bloggers} you will discover new blogs, be inspired to make something new, try a yummy new recipe, and most importantly make new friends!
This party is hosted by Gracie and me, and your projects will be shared on both of our blogs. We love that you're here and we love featuring you on our social media so be sure to follow us so you can see if your post gets shared!
We also pin to our Making Monday Pinterest board and we'd love to have you follow along! This is a place you can find projects from all the previous parties, too, so it is like a party every day

And to celebrate spring I have a giveaway running with Rachel from Like A SaturdayPLEASE go enter by clicking HERE or the monthly giveaway button on the side bar :)

Here are the features from last week's party chosen by Gracie ~
(Lori has taken the next week or so to spend time with her parents. So I'm running the party with you guys for a while. Be sure to visit Lori and say you miss her but her awesome posts wont be gracing us with their presence for a little while.)

With all this spring weather I'm ready for some good spring food! I am still on all the cold weathr foods like soups and things so it is great to have a recipe like this one from Brett of This Mama Loves. This Feta and Spinach Stuffed Chicken sounds like the PERFECT way to end a warm day, I may modify it and attempt it on the grill just for another excuse to be outside :)

As always with spring comes CLEANING!! And Sonnet from SoHo Sonnet has shared how she Got Organized. She took a small space in her garage and gave it meaning by adding cute bins, signs, and peg board!! (Peg board works wonders doesn't it?!)

Kelsey from Fancy That Notion shared how to make a super awesome DIY Leather Statement Necklace. She chose some beautiful natural colors but if you are ready to jump in to spring full force I bet you could find some super bright colors that would be perfect for Spring :)

Ok, I don't have kids so I don't usually love kids crafts. But Courtney from Crafts by Courtney has shared a super awesome Crayon Resist Watercolor Kids Craft. I mean, yes it is simple enough for a child but how cool is this for new spring decor! I'm thinking I may follow this technique for a spring mantel revamp :)

Now if you are one of our lucky features PLEASE grab a button and share on your blog!

And don't forget if you didn't make it as a feature this week to check out the Pin board and to keep linking up, next week could be you!

Thankful Thursday (ready for spring)

This last week we had beautiful weather. I've been forced out of this winter coma and reminded how I would rather be working on a project than sitting at my computer. Don't get me wrong I adore blogging, but only because it lets me share what I love doing and it has given some sort of "schedule and purpose" to my days.

I love being covered in dust from a hard day being productive on a project. Or having paint covering my jeans because I'm the messiest painter no matter the size of the project. I'm so glad I don't have to bundle up just to walk across our yard to the studio. I'm so thankful for the warmth the sun provides. Here's a cheesy line but I think it rings true today, this warmth has literally warmed me inside and out. Pushing me to be productive with my days and reminding me of goals.

Man the sun works wonders!

It also makes beautiful things like these babies appear! I'm ready to fill our yard with color and enjoy it all day long!

Also, bragging wife here, perk of your hubs working on 5,000 acres is he gets to bring home amazing flowers :)

Man the sun is the best!! Hurry up spring!

What are y'all thankful for this week??
