Beginning Print Making

Alriiight.
So, I haven't shared any of my printmaking projects with you yet so here are a few that I have on hand. I will try my best to explain the process of each one, but I'm only a beginning student so don't hold me to it!!

This class was really intimidating to me. My roommate had taken it the semester before me and made beautiful pieces of work and tried to explain the process to me. I just didn't get it, there are so many steps that I was not looking forward to this class at all.

Luckily I had my girls take the class with me so it wasn't as scary as originally thought. (My girls are some of my best friends that I was lucky enough to have nearly every class with them this past semester. Being with each other from 10am-8pm nearly every day really brought us closer!)

So, our first project was etching on a metal plate (I am pretty sure they are zinc plates). We had multiple tools that we could use to literally scratch in to the plate to make your image. The technique we used was covering the plate with hardground, which is a hard acid resistant substance that we paint on to our warmed etching plates. Once the hardground has hardened on the plate you then take your etching needle and draw the image through the hardground. The areas that the hardground was removed then would be exposed to the acid during the acid bath. The acid eats away the zinc and literally leaves your image on the plate. Once you have the image the way you would like you then card it with ink, wipe it off, and run it through the press.
(There is a lot more to it then that, but I didn't wanna get too technical. )

This project (1) we did exactly what I explained above. We picked an object from the studio and had to render it in a way that was inspired by an artist or artistic style. I chose the aprons hanging in the classroom and decided I wanted to focus on the natural lines that they created.

Our second project was to learn the aquatent technique. Aquatent is a technique used to create more tonal variations. You begin by placing your zinc plate in to a resin box and coving your plate with a very fine resin dust. You then melt the resin on to the plate and draw on your image with a litho pencil. A litho pencil is basically a wax pencil (kinda like a crayon) that resists the acid. Aquatent is difficult because you have to work backwards. The places you want to be darkest you DON'T draw. You want the acid to hit the darker spots leaving marks in the zinc plate which would then hold the ink for the print. So, you are basically drawing your image in the negative allowing the darker tones to be hit by the acid in the bath and the lighter spots to be covered, completely shielded from the acid. This can take multiple steps, or bites, to get all of the variations wanted.
This is an image I altered from one of my photographs of Reed in the garage. As you can see I didn't master the aquatent. There are some really harsh lines that I should have bled out a little more.

For the third project we could pick one of the two, or both, of the techniques mentioned above but we had to add color. I chose to stick with the basic line etching technique. I did a simple drawing of a girl fishing. I was commenting on how you can be feminine while doing typically "masculine" activities. I never really mastered this technique either. But I will explain the color process as best I can. You can't see it on the scan but I carded (meaning I wiped ink in to the lines and cleaned off the excess only leaving the ink in the marks left by the acid.) the figure in black and the dock and trees in a darker brown. I then did a blend roll over the top. A blend roll is where you take at least 2 separate colors and roll them together and blending them in the center. After you have the color blocked out on the table you then roll it across your zinc plate. To avoid the figure and the dock I cut out a stencil and laid it on the plate and then rolled  my yellow and blue blend across it. You can tell on the far left side of the figure that the stencil shifted some. I should have added more lines or aquatint on the dock to allow it to pick up more color.
And of course I don't have my 4th project to show you, it is still at school. I will do a post at the beginning of the semester showing all of my projects that were still being graded at the end of school.

I do have my final. This is a totally different technique than mentioned before. This is a woodcut. That means, no zinc plates, no hardground, no etching, no acid! A woodcut is pretty self explanatory. You are cutting your design in to a block of wood. You essentially make a large stamp out of wood. But when you start adding in different colors that is when it becomes something a little more complicated. For this piece we did 4 color runs. With woodblock you are also working backwards. But this time you draw out your image (if you want) on your block with a sharpie. You then pick what you want to be your lightest/highlights and carve those out. In this piece I left a few highlights on the barrel and then carved out the lace pattern in the handle. You then mix up your second lightest color and run your prints through the press. After that you then pick what you want to remain that 2nd to lightest color and carve all of that out. So I carved out everything that is left that pale, dusky lavender. You continue this pattern all the way until black, or what you want to be your darkest color. So at the end of the process you really have very little of your image left on the block. I only had the small black lines around the front of the gun. Again, I commented on how you can be feminine and take part in "masculine" activities. I chose the revolver because my dad is a gun smith and guns were something that I grew up around and I chose the lace because of its soft, elegant, presence in clothing and the home.

There is a lot more to each of these processes, that is just a beginners quick explanation. Printmaking is truly a lot of fun and very relaxing. I'm unsure as to if I will take it again before I graduate but I would really recommend at least taking a beginners course in it if you ever have the chance!!

Desert flower canvas

Eh, I don't really feel like talking.

But I want to share this painting with you guys.

A friend of mine from high school got married last October and asked me to help with a painting for their living room.

This is a 36x36 canvas that I painted with acrylic paints. It was relaxing to have something that I could just have fun with.

I didn't get any pictures with it hung in their home so this is it up in my bedroom :)

Sorry for being so sort. I just don't have anything interesting to share.... :)

This still isn't real life :)

Alright today is gonna be a "wedding day". I don't post much, and I really don't post much about my upcoming wedding. I would love to share my plans but honestly I have not been able to be a huge planner (like usual) because of school and being out of town. But I have a few things I can share and today just seemed like the perfect day to do it!

As you know, well maybe, if you're my friend on facebook then you know that I have been engaged to Reed for 136 days and our wedding day, August 4th 2012, is 71 days from now! 71 is an odd number to celebrate but it just hit me hard today.

IN 71 DAYS I AM MARRYING MY BEST FRIEND!
AND EVERYONE I LOVE WILL BE THERE!!

I think it hit me today because I have been blessed to receive the mock up of our final invitation, the preview of our engagement pictures, and have made progress with so many other plans like, the bachelorette weekend, house decorations, updated our registry, finalizing our song selection, bridesmaid dresses, and so much more!!!

Because I feel like I could explode with joy I have decided to let you guys in on some of the fun :)
Don't worry, I'm not gonna ruin the surprise. Most of the big details will be left out so that when you show up for the big event you will still be surprised!

1st lets go back to some basic details.

-We are getting married later in the evening (around 7) August 4th. Yes we know it will be hot and thats why we picked a later time so hopefully their will be some shade and it will cool off once the sun dips behind the trees.

-We are keeping it VERY casual and laid back. We decided from the beginning that what is important to us is that we can share this time with everyone we love. So if we had to cut cost on decorations, flowers, and what not to accommodate for all the guests then so be it!

-We were blessed in so many ways and the first blessing was our venue. Our church family has stepped up an unbelievable amount and through different connections we found this beautiful field, barn, and pond that is owned by a family from our home church. They generously offered their place at no cost! And have even agreed to a few modifications to fix up the wedding in my DREAM spot!

(doesn't this remind you of Pride and Prejudice?!)

I can't begin to tell you how beautiful the land is! You will just have to wait for the real photographers to capture that!

Now lets move on to some of my more personal picks and details!

1. if you really wanna see my vision for the wedding go look at my Pinterest. I'll share some things from there but not everything.

- The color scheme I chose is pretty soft. Lots of dusky colors that you see when the sun is setting. They are soft cool colors that don't "take up much room". I knew from the start that I wanted soft colors that would compliment the nature around us.

(I found this color pallet from Design Seeds)

-For bridesmaid dresses I just sent them the colors and am allowing them to pick their own. Lydia (my maid of honor and little sister) picked a beautiful dress from Forever21 and I've heard from some of the other girls that they have managed to find dresses from other small boutiques! (I gave them as much freedom as possible so some of the dresses are colors that aren't found in the pallet but that compliment and mesh well with the rest).

-Now this picture isn't what I'm doing. But  I thought it would be a good visual :)
I asked Reed to collect a few duck feathers and turkey wing feathers for me back in season. Luckily that was a task he and his boys enjoyed :) I have PLENTY of both kinds of feathers so I think I am going to use them for the boutonnières and maybe put some in my bouquet too!

- Just sayin, Daddy has already gotten a few of these off ebay :) He is enjoying wedding planning too!!

So, thats only a few of my ideas from the fabulous Pinterest

Now, on to the some of the more exciting details!

- I'm not gonna show yall the invitations even though I have the design finished and have the mock up in my hands. But this was our save the date.
My lovely friend Emily S. designed them for me! We are in school together and have become so close over the past 2 years. I knew I wanted something that looked hand done but I just didn't have the guts or the time to do it on my own. Emily did PERFECT! She captured the casual sweetness that we hope our wedding day will be filled with.

-Andy lastly. Reed and I have been SUPER blessed by the loving people around us. We have even been blessed by people that didn't know us until not to long ago. We found our photographers through good friends and family and knew they were exactly what we wanted. Budgeting was a little tight so I was uncertain if we were going to be able to make this work. Luckily, this couple was willing to be unbelievably generous before we even met! The Mondays  worked out a price that worked within our budget and the blessing didn't stop there. They are an amazing artistic team and we meshed right from the start. I had been emailing them back and forth talking about ideas for engagement and other stuff since the end of January and we FINALLY got to meet this past monday! Reed and I had an amazing time with them and they blessed us yet again with AWESOME pictures! Check out their blog and facebook to see some of the pictures!

Please visit The Mondays! They truly are an exceptional couple and fabulous photographers!!

Well, I hope that wasn't to much gushing. I really am just so excited by how everything is turning out, and am stunned by the amount of generosity that has been thrown our way. I will continue to update y'all when the craft time gets closer!!

PS. I promise I haven't forgotten about the give-away! I'm working on that post this weekend!!

Spring Photography

Here are some pictures from my intermediate photography class. I'm kinda bummed because my scanner at home doesn't have as good of quality as the one at school. I wont have access to that one again until class starts back, so for now these will just have to do. Just trust me the actual prints aren't so blown out!!

We had 6 assignments for the entire semester. I only have 4 up because I haven't gotten my last two assignments back from the professor yet. I'll share them when I get them because they are some of my favorites!

For this assignment we had to take self portraits. There are many different kinds of self portraits and we had to do:
1. one with out me in the frame
2. narrative
3. representational
4. character
5. psychological

I don't have them all up here but they are all up on my facebook page if you wanna see them :)

This photo was my "character" print. I feel kinda dorky and I was so not good at this shoot. But, I really do love riding with Reed but it would be such a joke if I ever got my own bike! It makes me laugh just thinking about it biker Gracie...
So basically I chose this "character" because it is something that interests me and is kinda a "dream" I guess you could say. Bikers, like real bikers, fascinate me!! If I wasn't such a scaredy cat I would have gone to the Twisted Spoke for my documentary project.
This photo was my representational portrait. (its really blown out so please forgive the blinding highlights!) I wanted to do studio photos for these and to keep them simple so it was a literal representation of me as I am all the time.

Now this is a different project. In my self portrait project I chose my shoes to be the object that represented me. I know thats weird, but I LOVE shoes. I hate shopping but if it is for shoes I will go in a heart beat! Shoes are just so fun and can be so funky!! Basically for this project I took my shoes and kind of extended my "portrait" project. I wanted to comment more on how I may be very feminine in the fact that I enjoy shoes, but I am not very "prissy". I tend to enjoy things that aren't typically expected of a female. So I placed my shoes (the feminine side of me) outside in places that you wouldn't usually see high heels.

There are more of these on facebook also. It was interesting to see how the shoes almost became animal like. Specially in the photo above, they look like a flock of birds or something...
Now this next project was actually the first of the year. We were told to take a walk and brainstorm what we wanted to shoot.
I had just gotten engaged at the time of this project so I was thinking A LOT about my future and where my time would be spent. So, I started going around and photographing the things that I find interesting about the good ole Clemson area. I realized that I am in love with Clemson. But more the town than the school. There is just so much character and beauty in the upstate. I hope that these two pictures capture some of that captivating character and beauty. (There are more on facebook).

And then our second project was to go on a scavenger hunt. Out teacher gave us a list of places around campus that we had to shoot. We could pick our own "theme" as long as we were in the location specified on the scavenger hunt sheet. These are just some of my favorite images from that.
I know that was a lot of pictures and writing. I hope it wasn't to boring. I find myself comparing my blog to other blogs a lot. And I don't really know why people read mine. I don't give tutorials and I don't really have that interesting of a life. But I am thankful for all of you who do read and enjoy my artwork.

As I mentioned like a million times above, check out my facebook page. I've added all of my photos from this semester photography class.

Alriiiiiiiigghhhtttt :)

Played hooky from the blog world for a while. I just don't think my life is interesting enough to post daily or even weekly for that matter! I would love to have new fun projects to share with yall all the time but in reality I don't.

Well, I guess I do during the school year. I get a new project every 2 weeks. Actually I get 3 new projects every 2 weeks. So basically, I've got a lot of sharing to do with you guys! (catching up as always, maybe one day I can stop saying that.)

First things first.
I'm gonna finish out my sculpture projects. You have heard about 3 of the 4 already so I'm just going to share the final one now.

This project was open. Literally do whatever you want.
IT WAS SO HARD!
I have struggled with creativity all semester and then I'm just thrown in to the lions den. No guidelines no requirements just whatever project I've been "dying" to work on all semester. Sadly, in my case the project that was taking all of my creativity was the wedding, and I couldn't really turn that in as a final sculpture.
Luckily I have been exploring some cohesive concepts in my other classes so I decided to build on that thought in sculpture. I think it turned out EXTREMELY well.

I'll show a few pictures and then explain.

So basically, the second gun, the one that has the lace pattern on it is my project.
I have been focusing a lot on what it means to be feminine. I've looked at femininity verse masculinity and girly verse feminine. Then also what characteristics make someone feminine or masculine. This project was kind of a self reflection. I realized that I  don't really fit a standard. I like to consider my self feminine but don't enjoy many of the activities that go along with that role. Such as; shopping I just can't stand it! But on the other hand I enjoy things that wouldn't be expected for a girl, like any kind of building, welding, and I don't personally hunt anymore but I can totally hold a conversation on guns, and almost any kind of hunting (thanks to Reed, my dad, and brothers).

To figure out how to make this project say feminine rather than girly I made a list of what I considered masculine and how I defined femininity. I'll share those and hopefully this will make a little more sense.

Masculine:                                      Feminine:
- Leader                                          -Graceful
-Protector                                        -Tender
-Provider                                        -Soft
-Fixer/Problem Solver                    -Caring
-Handyman                                   - Gentle

With these two lists compiled I tried to think of objects that exuded some of the same characteristics. I eventually came up with lace as the object that read as the most feminine. Lace is pure, light, delicate, graceful, timeless, and domestic. And I chose a gun because when I was making the list of masculine traits I immediately went to the men in my life and all of them have been some kind of sportsman. My dad, JB, Tucker, and Reed all are very interested in hunting and guns. So I felt that a gun is something that can be read as very masculine.
These two objects also have a connection to me personally. I have always enjoyed lace I think it is so beautiful and whenever I see a lace clothing item I always want it :) But oddly enough I'm also connected to guns. My dad is a gunsmith and as I have stated before guns are something that I learned how to handle growing up so I am pretty comfortable around them. I felt that a lace gun would not only comment on masculinity vs. femininity but also be a sort of self-portrait.

Sadly, I didn't complete the project for my critique. As you can see in this detail shot I only managed to carve out one section of the lace pattern. I will be finishing this project over the summer to show in my Senior interview in August. I hope to completely carve out the gun stock and then re-finish the wood. I would love for the gun to still look usable. I don't want it to read as an art piece. I tried to document it in a place that showed it as a functioning gun, not a delicate mantle piece.

I am extremely proud of this project. I really enjoyed the concept and it is something that I would really love to go deeper in. Maybe it will be my focus next year?!

PS. These ladies are awesome crafters and share a lot of fabulous ideas
